the season's quiet kiss

Shadows suffuse in softened silver,

Air so sweet it stings,

Winter flirts with the chilly river,

Frost embraces flower and splinter,

And with ice on her breath, the dawn softly sings.

/

Chill snaps beneath my heavy boots,

And crumbles to icy glitter on the ground.

Nature’s given up her Autumn fruits,

Retreating deep to ancient roots,

My pluming breath the only sound.

/

Still, from the morning Winter flees,

And greener then the woods become.

There’s stillness in the branching trees,

A breath exhaled ‘midst dripping leaves,

As snowflakes to the sun succumb.
