Say It Again

He said he wanted me to lose my virginity

with a married colleague from his work.

Such a scandal unfolding, no doubt,

especially in a small town.

Say it again, Daddy, to bring us all shame.

The man allegedly framed for adultery

was supposed to fix the first computer in our house.

The one I shared with my baby sister,

it truly felt like sharing a bed with your mother.

Say it again, Daddy, to bring us all shame.

He never bothered hiding his vices.

Once, I found pornography in the side drawer of his work vehicle.

He'd asked me to vacuum it for him.

I regret that to this day.

Say it again, Daddy, to bring us all shame.

He often scratched himself in front of the TV,

much like the male peers I detested at school.

So immature, and yet at school.

Which vision of mankind's future did I hold?

Say it again, Daddy, to bring us all shame.

Those who offend publicly live among us.

They are our fathers, schoolmates, husbands.

They demand what they believe is theirs,

which they never lawfully receive from their wives.

Say it again, Daddy, to bring us all shame,

If you lose your job, we all suffer.

Parenting a daughter well proves challenging.

You can't trade me for a boy,

the one I always wished I was.
