I feel so pretty...

But what is up with this itch?

Are braids the culprit?

A/N

Controversy
On YouTube I've recently seen multiple braid wearers publicly complain about the adverse side effects associated with synthetic braiding hair. Synthetic braiding hair is commonly used for popular braid styles primarily advertised to Black women. Hives, acne, itchy skin, thinning edges, and even nose bleeds were reported via YouTube video testimonies.

Personal Experience
Several days ago, I noticed that my neck would itch badly every time my braids touched the skin on my neck. I was initially bummed because I always feel like a princess/movie star when I leave my braider's chair, but deep down I know that vanity and convenience are not worth dealing with the allergic reactions associated with using synthetic braiding hair.

I noticed that once I cut my braids out, the itching on my neck went away. I eventually took my adverse reactions and the informative YouTube vids as a sign from above to pause on getting my hair braided for now.

Cancer-Causing Chemicals Detected?
According to Google, Consumer Reports conducted a 2025 study that found that synthetic braiding hair contains cancer-causing chemical toxins and carcinogens within it. Thus, increasing a person's potential cancer risk.

My personal allergic reaction and the negative testimonials on YouTube of other synthetic braiding hair wearers have placed me on alert. Perhaps non-toxic braiding hair will be created and available for consumers to purchase in the near future. For now, I'm keeping an eye on the situation.

An Alternative Option
I just learned that there are plant-based braiding hair options online. Therefore, I will look into those the next time that I need my hair braided for a special event.
