Dance With The Devil

Only myself to blame

Brown eyes staring up at me

Arms looped round my neck

The smallest smile on your perfect lips

In the waning moonlight you seem to shine

Everything I ever hoped could be mine.

My hands rest on your hips

So lost in you I never thought to check

Behind the lies of who you pretend to be.

-0-

Remembered taste of you

Lingers in every leaping shadow cast by firelight

Claws dig ever deeper

Raking my soul across the flames

But I'm just one of many names

In a book of broken hearts from all those weaker

Or too scared to take flight

From the terrible things you make us do

-0-

Perfect lips in a perfect face

Alluring smile

Easy grace

Making me run to keep the pace

-0-

Losing weight and life and love

Strength has fled from arms once firm

Hoping to keep you in my arms forever

All the while knowing I could never

Be more than something that you watch squirm

In the moonlight from far above

-0-

Desperately I hope and strive

For what I need to feel alive

Your touch against my face

I'll burn the world to earn a place

Standing next to you among the ashes

Stained by blood from my soul's own gashes

-0-

Then one day you turn away,

Interest lost like autumn frost

Under the sun's reflected light, while in my soul burns passion bright.

Your wonderous laugh, cut me clean in half

My service done; you say you've won

But I ran a one-man race, never believing you could replace

All that I could be to you. I am a person who

You could never love, though I thought we fit like hand in glove

All the signs were there to see, if only I had the strength to be

The kind of man who could walk away, and find true love a different day

Now you are all my thoughts, I am plagued by shoulds and oughts

Regret chokes my every goal, fighting me for control

Of the rest of my life, every moment filled with strife

Who could guess it wasn't right, dancing with you in the pale moonlight?
