For My Dad

A short poem by

Kandis Kellie

She was born already smiling.

Through the years she went on,

Always smiling.

Smiling for no reason at all.

“Just because” most would say.

“‘Just because’, Not.” She’d always reply.

Still smiling.

When the years continued to weigh on her,

She never stopped smiling.

Like a caterpillar in a cocoon, she blossomed into a butterfly.

And what a beautiful butterfly she was.

Always smiling.

She smiled because she wanted to, because her life was beautiful in every way.

And she made the most of it.

When she got married.

She smiled, and cried (tears of joy).

When she had her daughter,

She smiled.

When she had her son,

Her smile widened and her heart burst with happiness.

She knew in her heart that nothing could take her smile away.

Even if something could, she never let it.

Most would call this beautiful butterfly. (Woman)

Strong, sincere and loving.

But I called her,

Mom.
