Crooked Jewels

What did I expect then, if not this?

This wasn't what I expected.

.

When I was up late, blinding myself with the light of the moon,

Thinking about leaving the blood and tears behind me soon,

I never expected to be alone on a battlefield full of bones and broken wheels,

Quietly whispering pleas to stop and making invisible deals

With the same devil who once carved wounds into my arms.

How funny that I've been tricked by the same sort of charms.

.

This wasn't what I expected.

.

I never conceived of the notion that I could be a fool

And fall under the same sort of circumstantial rules

That shift with the tide of petty, uncontrolled emotions.

They tip me and spin me around like the angry, violent oceans

Until I have absolutely no notion of what is up or down.

I only know that you wear the crooked crown.

.

This wasn't what I expected.
