There was hay all around,
and men workin’ the ground.
A few other clucks and I,
dreamt of sharing the smoko pie.
But not to become one instead.
Oh the dread – when a customer arrived.
He said’ I’ll ave’ a few hens.
With a look and a wave of the pie man’s hand,
My sister’s and I were well-advised,
To leave with the man to his new land.
Which I’m quite glad you know I was beginning to feel quite cooped up!
He bought us to a yard with a young boy,
Surely we aren’t his new toy?
A barn the size of all our previous cages combine,
We’ll have to determine our clucking-line.
Before we knew it the area was too small,
and they didn’t even let us out at all.
I overheard the man say “not yet – let them settle in”
If they had asked me, I’d have said I’m feeling boxed in again,
feeling quite cooped up!
On the third day with the afternoon sun,
Light shrouded the door with greetings from the young son,
With haste a few of my sisters leapt,
Yet I mistepped,
ended up in the arms of the man,
a decent perch I must say to scope and scan.
We’ll need to clip em’ wings I say,
Heard him as I merely got away.
Barely a moment on the yard,
Quick time to stand my guard.
The sun had almost faded, and barely a chance to poop
Again we’re shoved into the coop.
Yet I’m the one feeling quite cooped up!
So I whine and I whine to tell them how I feel.
And when they let me out I’ll peck their heels.
Oh no – and then it happened, an ache
So strong so bad, it pulls in the nether region did something break?
Agony and sorrow, what did I eat?
Surely nothing but barely, corn and wheat.
Cuddling with the warm hay,
The pains begin to ease away.
And pass beyond the nether,
Never did I feel this better.
Looking behind I see the egg.
I did it, it’s mine! I squawk and beg.
The young boy arrives with shock and surprise.
He picks up the egg shouting with glee,
as though it belongs to him – it will go great with the French-fries!
There goes the thief, his stolen my egg, with pride he flees.
Yet I’m the one who felt it cooped up in me,
always I’m cooped up in in here with these three.
