Cool Legislature

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 2 years ago • 1 min read
Caspar David Friedrich, "The Sea of Ice," (German: Das Eismeer), 1823–1824

The fearsome geometry of winter

Shows that the elements are indifferent

To us, as vines ignore the young vintner

No domicile can calculate the rent

Respect the jagged majesty of ice

The frosty armor of an antique god

Some secret logic or occult device

Makes each plane and angle heed voices odd

Ice speaks a language our ears cannot hear

But our eyes recognize its alphabet

The hand that wrote these words makes us feel fear

What it knows, we are too young to forget

We learned law in its cool legislature

We are the estranged children of nature

Ekphrastic
