A poem meant to inspire.
Gradually succumbing to the digital hold.
Asleep and dreaming, we are not bold
Enough to open our eyes and see,
What has been done to you and to me.
Funny cat videos, outrageous opinions,
ISIS beheadings, memes about Minions,
Car crashes, sex, a farm simulation,
Algorithmically curated perfect stimulation.
All to distract from the great thieving swindling,
As tech robber barons hand us the kindling
To ignite and arouse the worst of mankind
Stealing our attention while robbing us blind.
A handful of people make millions per hour,
Stockpiling incomprehensible power,
As the masses remain glued to their screens,
Nefarious motives behind the scenes.
Watch a six-second vine, or argue online to taste a tiny dopamine hit,
Pause the grind and goon a bit, delve into the pornography pit,
Play the slots, parley a bet, tweet some perceived, minor discontent,
Or scroll without end through dual-screen Family Guy brainrot content.
We wonder why we’re agitated,
Frantic, sad, dysregulated.
Could it be the squandered time,
Spoils of The cyber-crime?
Our attention’s been economized,
And so we shouldn’t be surprised,
That the mega-yachts of oligarchs
Reveal the cons and the marks.
Influencer culture implies there must exist,
Influenced masses: every hand needs a wrist.
We are the conduit through which it all trickles,
In thoughts and in dollars, in seconds and nickels.
It seems to maybe all be a sin,
And so perhaps I shall mark my skin.
Plunging deep down the digital rabbithole:
