Contemporary Alchemy
A poem by Dane Ezra Kunes
A mothers screams
Turned to bad dreams
Motifs and rhymes to hide and disguise in melodies
I spent my teens
Smoking weed and evading police
Thought I wasn't good enough for chasing my dreams
for a college degree
my fears and tears
were my puppeteers
can you see the strings?
They're why I sing
A child of poverty
No AP credits or golden tickets for me
Anxiety and hardship got the best of me
But I won't let it get the rest of me
Because these broken pieces
Still belong in the puzzle
These bad memories
Still apart of the struggle
I made it
a mosaic of my hatred
So at times I'm so cold
Because the sorrow made me
But tomorrow it will save me
So don't pray for me
I'm so bold
G-d hear my plea
Spare me please
because this caged bird sings
My heart fluttered
I want to flap my wings
Because I turned straw into gold
Tragedy into alchemy
Agony into melodies
So I want all the smoke
Because from rust I made gold
So I won't fold
And that house may be a little broke
But Lord knows I will always call it home
and this a rough road
but from its cracks I grew a rose
