Concession

A comfort all its own.

Oh, the sweet peace of disengagement…

Of turning off and tuning out…

Of closing off the mind to the mindlessness of others…

Of saying, “It’s not that I can’t, I won’t…”

Of taking the lemonade and pouring it down the sink…

Of kicking the door shut, and letting it stay that way…

Of no longer bothering to defy convention…

Of letting people think what they will, regardless…

Of refusing to stand fast, stand up, or stand out…

Of deflecting the pain of sticks and stones…

Of not giving a damn about damnation…

Of giving up and giving in to the quietude…

Of embracing the inevitability of the inevitable.
