Comhchoirí

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

Sergey Kolesov, "A Ride," 2013

The promise of escape throbs through our hearts

I am grateful for your enormous strength

Some will call me a coward as we dart

Of our courage, they do not know the length

There are circumstances so dark and vile

Problems that defy reason and logic

Enemies who books of insults compile

Monsters that would cause a corpse to panic

Fleeing is, sometimes, the heroic way

Your grey gallantry is my salvation

Mere memories these trials will be some day

Your hooves sound out a loud incantation

It summons spirits of salvific speed

Now a horse is the only friend I need

NB: Comhchoirí seemed an especially suitable name for the equine friend, so beautifully rendered by Kolesov in the painting above and praised in my humble sonnet; it is an Irish Gaelic word for accomplice:

Ekphrastic
