Without any truth to cement lies in place
a little glue in the corners maybe some masking tape
they e x p a n d at such an alarming rate
sides shooting horizontally
unable to sufficiently elevate
the connections in the center begin to stretch
all the way across and down bowing
sagging fraying along each strand
before fully turning to dust
in a moment they disintegrate
a web of deception is like any delicate structure
it needs anchoring points
or any passing drizzle could destabilize and
ravage it no matter its beauty or its size
libels can’t be built upon aspersions and fibs
they require the thick mortar of veracity
to stand long in the wind

Mantis is the Journal published by Stanford University. Issue 23 contains this poem in its original format. Few journals want experimental poetry, so I was thrilled to have this accepted.
