Cold Cocytus

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

"The Devil Skating When Hell Freezes Over" (John Collier, 1894)

This calm, cool coasting is salutary

My own idle hands make a fine playground;

You lot need no help sinning; it's scary!

You are so lost, you will never be found

You've made tools so clever, they're using you

You demand freedom, then choose slavery

You think your own, ignorant points of view

Count as truths, and wallow in knavery

When corruption and lies are everywhere

What work is there for a devil to do?

Hypnotized and docile in the screen's glare

You don't need my help to turn the old screw

I can afford to enjoy a glad glide

You're undoing yourselves, with preening pride

Ekphrastic
