Every morning,

I make coffee for two.

I spoon out our favorite French Roast,

Inhaling the fragrance,

Especially when it’s a fresh can.

(You always loved that first sniff.)

I measure the water

And pour it in,

Push the button

And watch

As the rich brew begins to drip,

And the aroma fills the kitchen.

(You always loved the smell of coffee in the morning.)

I take out the cups -

One for you,

One for me.

(You always loved that deep blue cup.)

I lift the carafe

And begin to pour

Your cup.

(You always loved that first cup.)

As I turn to put

Your cup of coffee

At your place

At the table,

It hits me.

Again.

Your place is empty,

Your chair is cold,

And I am alone.

But still

I make coffee for two.
