I see you

That arched eyebrow inviting
Observers to join in on the joke.
Paying the check
When we both know you're broke.
You are the life I could have lived.

Your posts filled with beaches
Crafted-food with icy drink.
Perfect nails and clothing
Adventure waiting with willing wink.
You are the life I could have lived.

You meditate and hold the pose
Breathe deeply and reflect
Abstain from sugar, pass the cheese
All meat you thoughtfully reject.
You are the life I could have lived.

If only I had spoken out
If bravely I'd admitted doubt.
Hadn't been so quick to choose.
Afraid stability I'd lose.
You are the life I could have lived.

Suspicion hides behind your doors
Thoughts foaming with conspiracies
Grievances hurled at not-like-you
Fear holding what no one tries to seize
You are the life I could have lived.

I see your children gathered 'round
Close, no matter your mistakes
Your life told in stories
Shared through voice that breaks
You are the life I could have lived.

You are one now stepping back
Life lived now as you please
How? I cannot fathom
Leaving struggle, choosing ease.
You are the life I could have lived.

If only I had spoken out
If bravely I'd admitted doubt.
Hadn't been so quick to choose.
Afraid stability I'd lose.
I chose instead the life I've lived.
