Cicada
A poem about letting go

Does the cicada fear his own growth?
Does he stall the inevitable change?
Does he cling to his skin
- hoping -
Maybe this time he could stay the same?
-
Does he mourn what he has lost?
Does he feel pain or sadness?
Does he shed a tear at the sight -
- of his skin -
cracked open and hollow?
-
Does he wish things could have been different?
Does he shame himself for letting go?
Does he cling tightly to his skin?
- or -
does he change without fear?
-
Does he spring forth from his too small skin -
and leave it clinging to the tree -
never looking back -
at the dead part he no longer needs?
-
Does he moved forward?
Or stay still?
-
Oh Cicada,
I hear your song.
Please teach me your ways.
So I, too -
can let go without looking back.
-
Teach me to cling to the tree
when I need to
and let go
when I need to
