Christmas Mischief
How to enjoy Christmas a little more with your young ones,
I found that a Christmas Tree
And wrapped presents,
A magnet for my two young children
And they’d work out the contents.
***
As this spoiled Christmas a little
I had to get creative,
How to stop them guessing correctly
So I became innovative.
***
I would wrap normal household items
Old clothes, toys and school supplies,
They could feel and guess to their hearts content
Yet I was the only one to know they’d be surprised.
***
You see, on Christmas Eve
After they were both asleep in bed,
I’d swap out their gifts under the tree
And put the real ones there instead.
***
Christmas Day they’d commence to open their presents
Adamant they had guessed everything correctly,
Imagine their eyes when they were so very wrong
They got nothing at all that they’d guessed especially.
***
I was able to do this for many, many years
Before they thought it through and clicked
Exactly how I was organising this mystery
And that for years they had been tricked.
***
I overheard my youngest once say
“Mum must have taken a course before we were born,
On how to physiologically screw with your kids”
I cracked up with laughter but now they’re forewarned.
***
Please note two things for this trick to work
You’ll need plenty of the same wrapping paper,
As the presents need the same colours and patterns
On Christmas Day or they’ll be onto your caper.
***
Lastly, you can’t change out the presents
Until the very last second,
Make sure Christmas Eve they’re sound asleep
As they may just ask for a last checking.
***
So have fun and lots of enjoyment
Don’t worry I found other ways,
To ensure that each year thereon
Christmas Day, they were still amazed.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
