Christian Poetry: 'Letting Go Again'
Oh, to be carefree like a child!
I wrote this poem years ago in contemplating how we lose our carefree nature in adulthood. As children, we don't have much to worry about. But as the years go by, we turn into stressed worrywarts, carrying the many burdens of life on our shoulders. Being around children helps me to remember the fun and joy I once had and to learn to let go again.
Picking wildflowers on a summer's day
Little girls giggle in carefree play
And the sounds of their merriment linger in my ears
Reminding me of what I've lost down through the years
For little girls grow up and see the thorns for the rose
Weighed down with worry, the heart folds underneath all its woes
The laughter drifts away, tears accustom to their flow
Oh, but the children are teaching me to let go again
Seemed time moved so slowly when I was young
But now the days fly by and then they're gone
And the regret of yesterday, and the dread of tomorrow
Too often rob me of present joy and leave me with sorrow
For little girls grow up and see the thorns for the rose
Weighed down with worry, the heart folds underneath all its woes
The laughter drifts away, tears accustom to their flow
Oh, but the children are teaching me to let go again
