This is a convicting poem that may leave a bit of a bruise. It contrasts the imperfections of mortal man with the perfection of a holy God. We may not be long-suffering with others, or trustworthy ourselves, or even loyal friends, but God never fails. He shows us how to live and love.

What if God were a friend like us?

There for the sun but not for the storm

And took away your coat when you just started to get warm

And talked about you to the angels and broke your trust

What if God were a friend like us?

What if God were as long-suffering as us?

And the last straw was pulled the very first time

And the sentence overtook the crime

And there were no chances to fix what was

What if God were as long-suffering as us?

Hallelujah, His ways are higher than us

But, oh, what does this say about us?

What if God regarded His word like us?

What if He changed his mind midway

And said, "I don't feel like it today"

And never did what He said, never showed up

What if God regarded His word like us?

What if God had a work ethic like us?

What if He did everyone else's job but His own

And spent half the time on the phone

And were too lazy to send His Son to the cross

What if God had a work ethic like us?

Hallelujah, His ways are higher than us

But, oh, what does this say about us?
