I could not see what you did

Not where I was from

I stood in the nighttime

You stood in the sun

In darkness all the flavors of life

Seemed to taste like one

While bright days showed highlights

Of what was yet to come

No one ever shared with me

The places I could go

That’s because my teachers

Never knew what they didn’t know

Curious after an endless day

Of asking and being told “No”

I wandered past the barriers

To prove that I could grow

Immediately I saw sunshine

Pace, potential and wow

Life flourished in my presence

But which path would I allow

I gawked at opportunity

I knew the time was now

My promise was to the future

I made myself that vow

The bounds that I was born into

Were not mine to choose

Those bounds were not wide enough

They were meant for me to lose

Instead of staying inside the lines

And wallowing in the blues

I filled my page with rainbows

For we all have the power to choose

surreal poetry
