Chimney Smoke

A Poem

Gray blossoms burst, almost substance,

before they float too high above.

Sooty somersaults expand, thin,

and fade to wisps, become pale dusk.

***

So like the promises uttered

by a friend who’s fallen in love

sincerity devolves, made mist

by novel infatuation

***

Watching each silver puff escape

some hidden hearth, the world grows dark

and hours tick past, traces too faint

to know if fire still burns at all.
