Chicken

they called me lovingly

a little girl fearful of everything but her family

make as little noise as possible... chicken.

my uncle made me cut tomatoes while I sobbed

Cut chicken cut.

no time for fear there's nothing here

"Don't be a chicken."

Chicken was scared of everything but the tv

mind her own business while the world around her was hurting

speak Chicken speak

"you should never be fearful of me"

but you are turning out like the horror stories I've seen.

Turns out Chicken lived to see some things

but they said it so lovingly

and it could never be them

we blame the hens for the butchers mistakes

and when our blood, breasts and eggs are not enough

they want our tears, hearts, and minds.

because chickens play games and chickens have fun.

"but I still love you, Chicken." will always be bittersweet coming from the mouths of bloodline men.
