In kindergarten when we fell
They would bandage the knee
Instead of letting it bleed
And we forgot how to feel,
In later years when
Damaged by first loves
They told us not to express
Put a bandage over our hearts
And we forgot how to care,
When telling our first dirty joke
And not understanding the punchline
Or saying "fuck" for the first time
Out of frustration for the right words
They put a bandage on our tongue
And we forgot how to speak,
Then upon seeing our first R rated movie
Or gazing upon the knob of Michaelangelo's David
Erected in marble but not yet erect
They put bandages over our eyes
And we forgot how to see,
So that when we graduated into
That terrifying world
We found ourselves failing
Because we were so well protected
