Cathedral of Neon

A Ballad of Whiskey, Regret, and Rain

By Tim CarmichaelPublished 4 months ago • 1 min read

The neon bar light bleeds across the grime

A holy neon glow for saints of chance

We trade heavy hours for rounds of rhyme

And lose ourselves inside a jagged dance.

*

The city bustles in shadows

While ghosts of lovers haunt the jukebox song

We hold our dreams beneath a dying star

And wonder where the sunlight went so wrong.

*

Life tastes of gin and regret

A bitter tonic for the lonely soul

We burn through every smoke and cigarette

To fill the hollow places in the whole.

*

The moon hangs like a leaden coin

Above the alleys where the lost reside

We wait for midnight moments to adjoin

With nowhere left for broken hearts to hide.

*

The whiskey burns a path toward the truth

A fire that consumes the brittle bone

We waste the final embers of our youth

To carve a kingdom from this bleak unknown.

*

The night will claim the wreckage we remain

And swallow all the madness we embrace

We seek shelter from the driving rain

Within the solace of this holy place.

*

The morning comes to wash the filth away

And leaves us cold until the next display.
