Caramel Complexion

As a first generation, female Australian, this is a poem about finally believing in myself

By Rachel Rose AndradaPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

In a garden of liquored fables, fairy lights and enchanted dust

I sip a toast to the little caramel girl I was

My tale is a tale of generations

That loved, but currents disconnected us

And I think I am finally starting to break the spell

Where we manifested self-doubt and 'Am I good enoughs?'

In the Autumn air, there is chatter and wine

My guy, with a navy bomber, buzz cut and ocean eyes

Is somewhere in the crowd and so I smile

He is proud of me

And asks for nothing

Except that I am who I am

A twenty-something, fun having, nap taking, often lost, freely dancing, spiritually questioning

Caramel woman, with relentless ambition to one day, be a CEO or something like it

Now that's magic

Because people like me don't slay the dragon,

Overthrow the king, or climb up the mountain

So now we'll drink, then I'll leave at morning light

Because I'm almost there and it'll be inked by night
