Pray tell us who

in distant past

was crowned

‘Queen of

Poetry,

Song…

all things musical’.

Calliope,

eldest Muse

of nine sisters…

Greek goddesses all.

Calliope,

effortlessly eloquent in poetry

transformed rhyme into song

with trumpet in hand,

melded wondrous words

with melody.

Calliope’s,

harmonious singing

futilely contested by many

sadly attested by King Pierus of Thessaly…

His daughters’ challenge ended

tragically in defeat

punished by Calliope,

turned into magpies

forever warbling tunes so sweet.

*

Along with melodious magpie song

Calliope’s name continues to live on

to this very day at Emu Park

where playful sea breezes have a lark

whistling through fluted pipes

hauntingly serenading that golden coast.

To Calliope song, let’s raise a toast.
