Butterfly on My Hat

The true story of a special flying friend

I walked across

The dusty field,

Hot,

Tired,

Discouraged.

“Come to Arkansas!”

The ad said.

“To Crater of Diamonds!

The only place

Where you can dig for

Diamonds

  • Real diamonds!

And keep whatever you find!”

They say

“Diamonds are a girl’s

Best friend.”

And who doesn’t want

To find

New friends?

So I went to Arkansas,

With visions of diamonds

Dancing in my head.

Huge,

Shiny,

Diamonds.

And I found:

Rocks;

And mud;

And dust;

And voracious bugs;

And sunburn.

But diamonds?

Not a one.

But.

As I walked away,

Empty-handed,

Dusty and discouraged,

A friend found me.

Not a diamond.

Something better:

A butterfly.

Why it landed

On the brim of my hat

I’ll never know.

For an hour

It rode there,

Taking a trip

Around the diamond field,

The most beautiful

Thing

There.

It flew off

When it had its fill

Of hat-touring,

But it blessed me

With its presence;

A special gift

That made the day

Worth living.
