Burning Skies

A lonely star cut through the black

Like hope refusing death

While scarlet clouds surrounded it

And stole the night’s last breath

The ocean moved beneath the glow

Restless against the shore

Like hearts that break in silence

Then return to ache once more

I watched the heavens split apart

With fire around the seams

Still holding pieces of myself

Lost somewhere in old dreams

The waves crashed hard against the dark

Still searching for release

Just like the war inside my chest

That never falls to peace

That single light above the sea

Burned brighter than my pain

Though storms kept building overhead

It still refused to wane

I thought about the years gone cold

The love that disappeared

Every promise turned to smoke

Every truth I feared

Still somewhere in that violent sky

A fragile spark survived

Reminding me the broken soul

Can somehow stay alive

So I stood beneath those crimson clouds

And let the night unfold

Learning strength can still exist

Inside a heart grown cold
