The sun renders the water legible

Translating the language of stars to blue

Light paints pool with signs intelligible

Marking the distance between me and you

How strange it is to envy a liquid

It holds you in a warm, turquoise embrace

It makes my dry yearning seem insipid

It mocks my awkwardness with fluid grace

There is one thing that light and water lack

Despite their shining, rippling beauty

Gazed upon, neither has eyes to look back

Nor a mind, to understand its duty

To witness your bubbling glory, here

To know that I can hold your image dear

Ekphrastic
