Brown is my favourite colour
it's hidden depths
simplicity and honesty
is it trusting or trustworthy?
Either way
I know that I'm drawn
to the compelling nature of
that burnt umber
soil is rich of it
because brown is a mix of all;
a collection of colours
and if you look hard enough,
maybe in a different light,
you can see the other
colours.
Yellow, red, blue.
A satyrid butterfly
a leather-bound book
and the bark of a walnut tree.
The sienna tones of the first cave paintings,
in brown, stories are told
a true earth element
sepia stains
for all is kept in shades
of smoky topaz and russet.
A misperception
of the surface
like the roots of a tree
hidden below
a God-given grassy canvas.
All you need to do to see
dig deep
sense the dirt and the earth
gently clawing at your skin
pulling you back to nature.
The awe overrides.
A return to the inherent.
The natural, the fruitful,
auburn and bistre
warming the skin and the soul
with its gentle touch;
like returning home.
My favourite colour is brown.
But,
if your eyes were blue,
that would be my favourite colour.
