Breaker One Nine
The wipers thump the night rolls deep
Old tires hum while silence sleeps
Eddie rides the icy road.
A ghost with chrome and heavy freight
He thumbs the mic a practiced tone
Breaker one nine, I ain’t alone
A crackle then Big Mama’s drawl
You out there Night Owl?
Can you hear it all
Ten years they’d talked and never met
Two souls in static unmet yet
She knew his dog his stent his loss
He knew her strength her quiet cross
Another voice all green and thin
Sidewinder here can I come in
He sounded young but eager still
New rig, new boots a greenhorn’s will
Copy that said Mama kind
Just speak your truth and mind the signs
Eddie grinned and gave a nod
The radio is a kind of god
Not one that judged or asked for gold
he listened close when hearts were cold
Steel and miles and miles of steel
Yet in that box the world could feel
So let the satellites go blind
He’ll ride with ghosts and humankind
The road’s still long the coffee’s hot
And someone’s always in that spot
That quiet wave that silent line
A life still lived on channel nine
oh no, now the skip’s come crashing in
The sky’s alive with rolling din
We must talk again he said low and sad
however for now breaker break, till we do it again
