Box's of Plenty

Sent with a Grandma's Love

In memory of Grandma

As a child we had not much, you see, there was seven of us.

Abundance came but once a month, contained in a large cardboard box.

Sent from Grandma Perkins, to say she loved us very much.

Anticipating what was packed tightly within, we would open the box and each peer in,

Every treat we could imagine stacked from side to side. From the bottom to the top special goodies she would hide.

In any open space a licorice she would place.

From cookies to Cracker Jacks and penny candy too. What was inside each box? We just never knew.

Some times a jar of peanut butter, another of Jelly, she would fill each box, to full capacity.

Knowing what we favored, packed somewhere inside, a special gift for each of us she would hide.

At times the bottom of the box held a last surprise!

Seven dollar bills, for us to have in hand, to give to our neighborhood ice cream man.

To us these boxes where heaven sent, I hope she knew just what her boxes meant.

These were her gifts, packed full with her gentle touch, for seven sisters and brothers who had not much.

The smiles from these boxes that nothing else replaces, remains etched in the memories of seven small faces.

I get it very well. There were eight of us and our aunt used to send us goodies too. If we could redo our childhood, would we want it any different. I would, but still with the grandmas, aunts and goodies. Wonderful memories of a kind grandma.

Love this! My own grandmother used to send us birthday gifts packed in an empty cornflakes box, it was always such an adventure.
