Bottled Perfection

If only!

The slightest breeze whispers across her skin,

Cooling her as she bathes in the sun’s warmth,

The days are waning, the rain persistent,

As summer gets ready to leave her side once more.

**

The birds sing a chorus of farewell,

The trees prepare their leaves to yellow and fall,

The whispering wind a reminder of the gale force to come.

**

Winter is on its way!

**

It may take a few months to arrive,

But the last few days have given her a taste of what’s in store,

As she wallows in the sun she’s missed,

Glistened in tiny beads of sweat that the breeze cools.

**

She swings the windows fully open,

Adamant she’ll bottle up the perfection of the day,

Glorious blue sky a backdrop to her mood,

Understanding the joy as nothing last forever,

Today is hers to drive into her memory.

**

Kookaburras land upon the wire to laugh at her antics,

Watching on the off chance there’ll be a feed,

An off cut of juicy steak fed between their beaks.

**

She watches and listens as they fly off home,

Wondering if it was their final goodbye,

Instilling the notion that it always ends,

The good, the bad, the in between — gone once more.

**

If only she could bottle the perfection of today!

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

My first thought was, "But we've just entered into spring. Winter's a long way off." Then I remembered where you live, lol. Yep, dumb is what I do. But I enjoyed the poem.

Beautiful. Reminds of the winter (?) months in Florida (if you can call 50 degrees winter) before our hurricane season that starts May 1. Like the calm before the storm.
