I may have traded
one lie for another
One sticky and sweet
with complex undertones
of not-good-enough and
almost-not-quite-committed.
The other spicy and rich
with layers that linger on the
tongue, a burst of nuanced flavors
to the tune of it-will-get-better
and happiness-is-just-around-the-corner.
Yet with both I am
left longing for a feeling of completeness,
of the need to feel full and satiated.
To be seen.
I keep thinking that maybe the next
bite will be the real one,
the one that delivers.
I've swapped empty promises
for painful ones.
Both have left me starving.
