Body

A poem in four parts

Your body.

It hangs over like a cloud

watching me, with burning eyes, as I

slalom through these busy streets

around the desperate noise.

-

I have no teeth left.

By now — I gave them all

to you. I brought them to

your altar.

-

The sun glows brighter

as if to warn me that each step

may be my last,

-

And as I stagger through more

constantly closing doors

the blades

seem to catch up.

---------------------------------

A plastic flower

marks the spot

where you took your final breath. Windswept now,

their melted petals

droop and hang

so low it makes my

body ache, and maybe bleed.

-

Your silver watch is still here,

but beneath this dirt, your

body is now skeletal.

-

Your flesh

is gone.

-----------------------------------------------

Drooling, the shadows stalked their prey

through those darkened streets,

and enacted an epic revenge - one spanning

a hundred thousand years -

the police will try to find them,

but they will have no luck

and the brutality of each act

will jab like needle-

point pen to paper.

in a dizzying fit of inspiration. Divine, but not comedic.

Like Ali at

Liston, muscles burning. They

built it all up, this

swelling mess that

we are glued in.

---------------------------------------------

My body stays within its resting place,

shattered and

crushed beyond recognition

by the heavy sheets which it calls home.

-

It may not move

for some time yet,

some part of it

refuses.
