Take what you are missing
Take what I can’t name
Leave me something holy
Or something mildly profane
You liked my hands when they held you steady
Liked my voice when I sang your song
Liked my back when the nights got heavy
And you said you couldn’t be alone
You kept the parts I didn’t offer
Shared pieces that you stole
And my broken made you stronger
My empty made you whole
So I became
whatever you needed
If this was your game
Baby I’m concedin’
I let you take me at the table
piece by piece and without shame
You wanted bread without the body
wanted skin without the name
You raised the cup but not your eyes
let reverence die on a velvet tongue
And I kept breaking just to feed you
Drowning in an empty cup
I called it mercy
It was madness
I called it love’s sacrifice
I couldn’t see
it was a crash test
I barely made it out alive
You wanted me in fragments
beautiful and dumb
the tender and the useful
the damage and the numb
Enough to be your shelter
not enough to call it home
Enough to taste the longing
on the edge of the unknown
You wanted me in portions
Scavenged what scraps remained
You’re a glutton for devotion
A strategist of pain
You left my fear
but took my faith
Taught my heart
to hesitate
You wore my strength
‘til it was frail
Watched me build
to let it fail
And I hate
how even now
some part of me still sees you in a crowd
Like time’s supposed to ease this
But I’m still arranging all the pieces…
I have left
You wanted me in fragments
but I came apart for real
I gave what you found useful—
What you had a mind to steal
I let you call it sacred
while you seduced me into hell
Enough to hold you close while
never getting to be held
You wanted me in portions
in sanctified disguise
The bread, the cup, the hunger
but couldn’t see me in your life
So keep the hush and heartache
the ghost of who I used to be
But when you spend me all in vain
Don’t remember me
