A poem

The city speaks to me
Where have you been?
Where are you headed?
Come, sit here with me
Without a trace of regret
This is the stop I have always longed for
Now that all the storms have finally subsided
I have at last found
A moment’s respite
What more could I possibly want?
I know this is not yet my final destination
I know where I wish to arrive
I have the journey mapped out in my mind
Perhaps not down to every last detail
But while I do not turn my heart toward the heartless
I turn it toward places
To soak in their atmosphere
By the water or within the city itself
Out in nature, or somewhere in between
In various states of mind
Where life unfolds in its purest form
Untainted by artificial additives
That is where I belong
Where the river flows straight and smooth
Revealing its little secrets, step by step
Where the timid coot seeks shelter
And the predatory grey heron lies in wait for its prey
Human nature finds its reflection here
And I am a quiet, passive observer of things
That not everyone is able to perceive
Especially when they are so deeply consumed by themselves
