Blame Szymborska
A Tribute to the Nobel Laureate
Note: I wrote this about one of my favourite writers to win the Nobel, the late poet Wislawa Szymborska. It is just a weak attempt to copy a style I admire in a modern writer.
Blame her for this.
I hadn't lifted my pen for anything
besides letters, lecture notes,
and the utmost importance of
course reports for previous semesters.
Blame her
for me trying to write again.
I have no other alibi for
my laughter over translations,
misunderstandings, seasons, families,
how love really works,
and the ocean of a bodybuilder's torso
(must head to the gym soon).
Don't blame her
for my weaknesses against politics,
the dull thread of my history
or the real lack of humour
in my verses
(totally culpable).
Blame her
for making poetry
that makes the modern warm,
the complex understood,
the impossible bearable, and
the art of living
worth the gems of words.
