Blackness Of Our Soul

A necessary duality

We all, as individuals, harbour a blackness inside

One that most of us attempt to keep at bay,

A good person is not one absent of blackness

But someone who watches what they do and say.

***

This blackness is a dark stain on our very soul

It is the place where our revenge likes to hide,

That horrid dark feeling of our deep hatred

And other such feelings we bury deep inside.

***

Possessiveness of another human’s free spirit

Further indication of our own dark blackness,

Insisting on taking away another’s freedom

All significant warning signs of our darkness.

***

Anger and rage can stem from this dark place

Allowing our dark feelings to spew out of control,

Causing others extreme pain and suffering

While highlighting the very blackness of our soul.

***

Violence and abuse of any kind is a warning

Whether it’s aimed at yourself or any other,

It’s not at all acceptable in any shape or form

Not to a child, friend, family, stranger or lover.

***

To achieve a healthy relationship with this side

It’s important to feel, acknowledge, heal, forgive,

Work through past pain received from others

Or you’re likely to forever remember and relive.

***

Forgive yourself and others for all wrongdoing

Not to let others and their dark side off the hook,

But to heal yourself so you can eventually let go

Forgive fully so you can then close that book.

***

Weed out the outside blackness affecting your life

Even if this means cutting ties, letting people go,

Learn to love and control the darkness you hold

And this will go along way to happiness, I know.

***

You are a beautiful work in progress in every way

And one day you’ll fully believe this is truly you,

The blackness on our soul is a necessary duality

So we can love both the light and the dark too.

***

Tomorrow is another day so please take your time

We are all fully aware Rome wasn’t built in a day,

Start by loving a little piece of that hidden darkness

Let it rest and heal while you let the light out to play.

***

Remember you are not at all bad, evil or despicable

As long as you set your intentions to light and love,

Sure there will be times you take a step backwards

But that’s all a part of your life journey thereof.

***

The blackness of our soul is both normal and natural

As it is offset by our dazzling soul’s brilliant light,

From birth, all through the years to the day of death

Dark and light will be polar opposites as day and night.

***

You’ll take each lesson as it comes and learn as you go

Two steps forward, one back, never giving up the fight,

Some days you’ll find you’re a winner, others will be hard

The outcome a pure soul that is less dark and more light.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
