Black and White

What makes me unique?

By Debbie BambrickPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

What makes me unique?

The psychedelic zebras rearing at my fingertips?

Whorls of flesh defining Deborah which speak

In black and white

What makes me unique?

My ancestors crossing oceans, bisecting seas in ships?

Whorls of flesh combining in passion which seeks

In black and white

What makes me unique?

My street, my town, my nation state? Each time I move it flips

Whorls of flesh in global currents, make new streaks

Of black and white

Why aim for unique?

Why search out difference in a society which rips

Whorls of flesh apart? Makes divisions which sneak

Between black and white?

I am unique

because my mind is free

I nod to

biology; family; society –

But I am not these things.

I am a spectrum, like you.

Too complex

To reduce

To one

Or two.

I am me.

And I see

The beauty of humanity

Reflected, refracted, never re-enacted

In 8 billion shades of grey.

surreal poetry
