Between Heartbeats
We’re in a Negative Space
My phone offers me forgotten memories
Photos of a little boy when he knew joy
An album of the unnamed
-
Names are a gift, a curse, a cage
The one I gave rejected along with the past
Without that or a future to work for, what does it matter
How one presents?
-
I literally drove you away, to build a new life
At least we stopped for coffee
Now I use one letter on a screen
That speaks paragraphs every time I press it
-
The dinner table has no empty spaces
Even if you're not accounted for
But we would make room
Right next to someone whose memories of you
Are just stories
-
I let go of that little boy, but
I carry an emptiness still
Born in the moment between heartbeats
