Better Off Dead

A Mid-step No One Wants

Damn

Awake again

So much pain.

Is anyone here?

Why am I here?

An accident?

A stroke?

A face flashes to mind.

My wife?

A daughter?

A nurse?

More questions than answers.

My heart aches

Physically

Emotionally

What is that beeping?

Is this the end?

No, don't do that.

Stop "saving me"

I'd rather be at peace.

This is not living.

Author's note:

This poem emphasizes the need for a living will. God forbid, if you ended up in a situation like this, unable to speak for yourself, you would want your former, lucid self to speak for you. "Do not resuscitate" needs to be in writing if that is your wish.
