You wanted to be better.

But you couldn’t be.

So I was instead.

I was better.

I was more forgiving.

More optimistic.

More kind.

And then you couldn’t get better.

***

Yet, you became better.

More forgiving.

More optimistic.

More kind.

Leaving me with the person

Who I always wished you to be.

Always wanted to run to.

Always wanted to hear the words,

“I love you” from.

And then you disappeared.

Dispersing into the ether.

***

I’m nostalgic for when you

Weren’t better.

Because maybe

This would be easier.

And I wouldn’t have

To be better

On my own.

***

The double edged sword

That abhorred familiarity

Played its last chord.
