Examining the fruit
I find its exterior
Shiny and ripe
ΛΛΛ π ΛΛΛ
A berry picked
At the peak of freshness
Summerβs highest height
ΛΛΛ π ΛΛΛ
A sweet aroma permeates
The stale air that surrounds
Like a mystical wind
Overwhelming my senses
Daring me to take a bite
ΛΛΛ π ΛΛΛ
Plump and firm
Not a spot in sight
Yet,
When teeth penetrate
Juices spray across my tongue
Suddenly, I detect a
Sickening hint of rot
ΛΛΛ π ΛΛΛ
Too late, the hunk
Dislodges
Tossing left to right
An oily putrescence
Blanketing the
Spotted
Bed of papillae
ΛΛΛ π ΛΛΛ
The taste of
Retch
Overwhelms
My senses
Acid and sugar
Mixes to a putrid slurry
ΛΛΛ π ΛΛΛ
The memory of
Evil
Pries clenched teeth
Wrenches locked jaws
With the unspeakable violence
Of the truth long disregarded
ΛΛΛ π ΛΛΛ
Now even the
Sweetest berries
Taste of
Bitterest defeat

Memory triggers can be overwhelmingly strong. The same miracle that Proust described as having transported him to his grandmother's kitchen can take a PTSD sufferer back to the abuse they suffered in an instant.
