Belonging

My galah

By Ranita HolgaPublished 5 years ago 1 min read
Handsome son

My galah does not belong to me; he belongs to the wild.

His pink and grey are not mine to own; they belong to the red dust and the blue sky (and the hollows of gumtrees).

An injured wing and fear of flight may have brought him to me ...

but I don’t own his little body.

His little body so different to mine.

What do I own? Do I own this body?

I still feel like a little kid. Like when I belonged to the streets and backyards and parks.

I thought I'd grow into feelinging belonging in my body.

But it doesn’t feel that way (it feels hopeless sometimes).

What colour is my body? Something deep. Maybe brown? Sometimes a fat pig pink.

Always a faded grey (that’s the only constant).

To be a wild bird smashing colour around. Pink and grey.

I am guessing, but I think my galah and I share that dream. Maybe that’s why he chose me.
