Behind My Painted Face
Behind my painted face I fall
colours loud but I am small
the branches twist inside my head
where yesterday’s words still sit like lead
I smile in blue, I laugh in red
but all my light feels long since dead
the roots have grown through every thought
and tangled up the fights I fought
Tears hang still from every leaf
I try to hide, I find no relief
the city waits, it does not see
this mess of branches that is me
I coloured pain to hide the cracks
but still it weighs upon my back
no magic cure, no saving grace
just silent screams behind this face
And if I break, I break alone
no guiding voice, no gentle tone
just lines of colour running thin
as darkness fights the light within
