Dance is Worship

The bass note thrums low in the bellies of the dancers

and they move with its hypnotic call.

Arms raised, they hail the DJ,

like a homogenous crowd of worshippers.

His fingers move quickly, sliding buttons,

turning dials with the expertise of a master;

a god to the revellers.

He clasps a headphone to his ear, his head stooped over his art.

He is deep in the zone,

feeding them with his enchanting rhythms.

Strobe lights flash and flicker in time to the thump of the music,

lighting up skin in electric blue.

Hands and arms are in silhouette

against the smoky pink fog on stage; their movements are jerky

and ethereal in the flashbulb rhythm of the light and beat.

Music matches the beat of their hearts,

and the crowd moves like a seething, undulating sea of pulsating life.

Thump –thump –thump –thump.

The track changes, and the crowd, recognising the electronic melody, cheers and roars, sending a wave of ecstatic energy to the roof.

The beat goes on, and the crowd continues moving, waving, worshipping, feeling...
