Battle Cry

Declaring War on Oppression

By David GoolsbyPublished 7 years ago 1 min read

America has declared war on me.

I ain't even do nothin, just a 20 year old black kid in school tryna get his degree.

So let me know what you peep when you see me walking down your street.

Do you see my truth or are you creating one for me?

Fuck it, you want war, you got war just lemme draw my shield and my sword,

Put my ink to a pad, grab a mic and record.

Ain't nothing new under sun my grandmother has seen this before.

But this ain't a war against man but man's ignorance.

This ain't church, I ain't Burt Reynolds but I'm handing out deliverance

If it don't preach "All Men Are Created Equal" then I'm killing it.

I go through more pens than a crackhead does lighters.

Roll another spliff to get me higher,

I'm stressed but I'm my father's son so you know I'm a fighter

But still you test me.

Momma grab my shield and my sword,

Your little boy is going to war and I may not make it back but if I do I return a man.

If not then know I died for a cause that's bigger than you and I and this is all according to plan.

But until then, I write.

Whether it's a joke, a script or some bars

Just know I don't aim for heads, I aim for hearts.
