His cousin had the look of someone who'd just finished a shift he didn’t want to talk about. Jacob shrugged. “Didn’t figure I would either.” Marcus dropped beside him. They didn’t hug. Just sat there, letting the silence do its thing.
“You still in tech?” Jacob nodded. “Still pretending it matters.” “Figures.” Marcus took a bite of cornbread. “You ever think about keeping this going? The barbecue, I mean. Dad's getting tired. Fire damn near beat him last year.”
Jacob stared at the pit. The coals were glowing dull red now, less flame, more ember. Like the whole day was catching its breath.
